Some other features of the Readers are:
• Warm-up activities and post-reading exercises are more skill-oriented than content-oriented. The focus is more on enhancing children’s command over English than on teaching just a lesson.
• Comprehension exercises take care of all the reading subskills like skimming, scanning, intensive, analytical reading, etc.
• A special feature of the Readers is the inclusion of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) questions, designed to shift the children’s thinking from stereotypes to original and individual responses, thus developing their thinking skills.
• Parts I-III lay stress on phonic drill. But the lessons included in Parts IV and V offer opportunities for conversation practice either in pairs or in groups. These conversation sessions will promote
fluency and enable free and uninhibited participation. They will also enable the teacher to take care of non-verbal aspects of communication like kinesics and paralinguistic elements and soft skills, particularly interpersonal skills.
• For listening comprehension, listening texts have been given separately at the end of the Readers.
• Structure Practice enables familiarity with basic structures and their correct usage.
• Writing tasks flow smoothly from what the children have read and discussed during the course of the teaching of the lesson.
• There are poems to recite and sing, and funtime activities to make the teaching-learning process an enjoyable experience.
• References to relevant sites on the web will enable children to discover the world of information and construct their own knowledge and understanding.
